I think the rusty nail thing is a bit far fetched unless you're coming in contact with someone else's body fluids and I don't think being born with one is common enough to really worry about.

Speaking from my past of hookups it was strictly condoms and birth control. With my long term boyfriend now we were both tested in the beginning I just pop birth control like it’s candy and pray it works that’s it.

Personally I used to be a big fan of condom but now I have a vasectomy. And testing is no big deal especially if your sleeping with a lot of partners. Just keeps everyone safe. Now it's really easy for me as I'm celibate.
