I think his dad probably assumes you'll both be ready soon and quite possibly won't have planned ahead; as in it will just be spontaneous. So he's making sure you'll be protected. Or possibly he thinks you're already doing stuff but your boyfriend doesn't want to talk to him about it so he's just trying to help you to be responsible while causing as little embarrassment as possible.
