What do you think about LGBT characters in media?

Some people don't like them because they're straight and can't relate to LGBT romance. Some people don't mind it. Some people like it. What about you? Is it a negative thing is a show have LGBT characters or you don't care or you actually like it? do you prefer straight characters or LGBT or don't have any preference. Honest opinion.

  • Let people just create whatever characters they want. Nothing wrong with something having LGBT characters in media, whether just included or the focus. Same as it's alright to feature cis straight characters, whether they are just included or are featured.

  • I think LGBTQIA+ people in media is a great thing. The fact that a particular set of humans have not had the same opportunities as another is appalling, especially if we are all taught that, "everyone is the same", or "love thy neighbor". Besides, if someone doesn't like it, they can just watch, read, listen to something else. No one is forcing anyone to participate. It's just giving opportunities that should've already been available. Just my opinion though.

  • If a character is going to be a this or a that in a story, so be it, as long as the REASON for them to be (whatever) is NOT to help force an agenda down my throat.
THAT is the real problem- governments and companies and who/whatever else trying to shove THEIR thinking down OUR throats! My brother-in-law will not even talk to people who don't accept all the choices he's made in his life 101%. Fine- one less toxic person in my life.

  • If it is an actual character that has a meaning beside beeing lgbtq its great. LGBTQ People exist, so why not include them in media its only fitting. And I dont even understand the argument "it feels set up", how often was there a person just to be a love interest to a main character outside lgbtq? Often enough! Just let that character, be a character in on itself and I dont care about the characters gender.

    • Are you straight. Aren't most people straight? How do you relate with LGBT characters. This is what I was asking. I mean LGBT characters exist but sometimes these characters act I don't know how to say stereotypical and it kinda seem forced.

    • I am straight. Yes most people are straight, I think, but not all. What you say seems forced is what I tried to describe as a character that has a meaning beside beeing lgbtq+.(I think) Stereotypical is not essentially wrong. You can't make a character thats like all lgbtq+ people. But dont movies use stereotypes all the time for everything. A general problem but not something I feel is wrong with lgbtq+ characters in particular. As long as its a fleshed out character I can relate with them maybe in other things, just not their love interest. But having a straight character doesn't guarantee that either. How often does the girl go with the action hero type guy. Mostly not my type either.

    • Yes I guess but I mean some people get uncomfortable with LGBT kiss/sex scene. and than you are relating with their non LGBT part.

  • LGBTQ+ member here. Honestly, I'm pretty happy with it. Its nice to be represented more in media.

  • dont care as long as they can act and it works for the story. what i do disagree with is when they can't act and the story/plot doesn't need it and they have just been added to be LGBTQ+ complaint/inclusive

  • Bring them on and give us some more so they can feel human too, as they should.

  • It's but not too gay trope, I don't like seeing gay stuff in the media.

  • I don't care, as in 99% of the stories, the sexual orientation doesn't matter.

    • Isn't it hard relating to LGBT romance if you are straight

    • No, not at all.

  • Aslong as they are a well designed character I'm not bothered

    • Are you straight? Than how do you relate with LGBT characters romance? also do you prefer straight character or LGBT characters or don't have preference

    • I'm straight I don't care about relating or not as not everything is made for me to relate to and again I don't have a preference aslong as they are designed well

    • Well well I am talking about if you are watching a show. Not a show being made. So would you actually like LGBT romance? since you are not LGBT yourself. That's my point.

  • I change the channel. This woke BS is ruining them. Good. Get woke, go broke.

  • I don’t like it if they’re thrown into the plot to make it more “diverse.” This makes the show seem contrived and unrealistic. I don’t mind it if it is done to add to the plot.

  • I don’t know what my sexuality is but I’ve only been with people of the opposite sex. Obviously I believe representation is important, why would it bother me unless I would be homophobic and feel the need to control other peoples lives?

  • It’s a great thing. Everyone deserves representation. Everyone needs a character they can relate to! Many gay characters in media have really comforted me growing up

  • It's so forced and cringey nowadays

    • yesss

  • To be honest i hate how much the media tries to make people like LGBTQ stuff i mean they can do whatever they want in their bed but why show it to the wide audience? Like not everyone is interested in seeing how gays are kissing and stuff. I like gay guys i mean i have some at school and they are good people i would neevr bully someone for this!!! they are people like the rest of us.

    • Yes I don't mind LGBT people but I prefer straight characters I don't really relate with LGBT characters and most of the time it seem forced

    • yeah like why do they force it so much in every movie? for example in the book after tristan was a guy but in the movies it was a girl? why?

    • Yes I don't understand it. LGBT people are such a small minority. This is why most western production don't seem interesting to me they seem too forced and woke. I prefer anime and k dramas

  • It's ridiculous. LGBT makes up < 4% of the population but are in 90%+ of current popular media. It's gross pandering.

    • Americans make up only 4.25% of the population, yet 90%+ of popular TV shows and movies in the world are American or based in America. Guess that's gross pandering too, and it's ridiculous to feature Americans so much. Same logic, so I assume you agree?

    • @MegaMachina No it isn't the same logic. Americans make most of the movies, so of course it's going to be Americans in them.

    • It's the exact same logic. The only difference is you are being petty and picking and choosing what suits your personal beliefs, not caring about facts.

  • Since I can't relate I would prefer straight characters

  • i don't.
anyone who feels the need to push it on others only highlights their mental/emotional shortcomings.
so - i just don't "consider" them at all.
    sometimes equality is just that.

  • We’re just now getting used to women in action movies.

They did a study recently that little girls write stories about men because they can't picture themselves. Representation matters.

    • But representation shouldn't be forced. Give more chance to women or even a guy who want to write those stories but a editor should not force a men or even a women who don't want to write strong female characters or even character. Same way let LGBT people or straight people who want to write them but don't force a straight person to do it.

    • Not only editor but liberal shaming them on internet for not being diverse is worse. I literally see people wanting anime to become more diverse.

    • Also if it is science fiction or fantasy series then strong woman are oky but if it place in normal world than this is just woke. Liberal People wanted grand theft auto to have female characters even though women are super rare in gangs. and how people wanted squid game to have strong female characters even though women are weaker. In my opinion there should not be women in game about gang/military since they're rare in those spaces. and women in story that take place in real life should have realistic strength.

  • I am 72... when I was a kid, my mother brother was Gay, so I was used to it, it was never an issue for me. Uncle Stan was a great guy, I loved him a lot... he was simply... my Uncle... since then, sexual orientation seems meaningless to me, I only care about mine... and I like Girls...

  • We have had straight relationships in series for years. It only makes people feel uncomfortable because they are not used to seeing it often. I'm absolutely fine with it, the more harmless ostracized people who are accepted the better... except for obvious ones like pedophiles, that should never be accepted.

  • Bunch of crap. Pointless
