I'd say it would be a sign of increasing self-derogation, since it's a word that has a negative conotation. Not for it's meaning only, but because that word carries a low opinion about a person being that way. The thing about language and words is that it's all just a bunch of sounds. The only reason any of it means anything is because we associate those sounds with meanings. This happens with the person saying it and the person hearing it. A girl hearing herself called a slut decides whether or not it is offensive and hurtful to her. Similarly, the person calling her that decides whether or not it is meant as offensive. The word slut is generally accepted as an insult, sure, but on a case by case basis any person could make any word into an insult.
