kinks are, one thing, fetishes are entirely different altogether. A fetish is technically a mental illness, where in the person with the fetish cannot even become aroused without the object of their fetish being present, they certainly cannot orgasm without the object of their fetish being present! For example: a person with a shoe fetish (for simplicity sake will say it’s a man). Without the specific shoe, he fetishizes, he would be unable to get even erection, and would be completely unable to ejaculate! The word “fetish“ is primarily a psychological term, and one that is unbelievably overused when people discuss sexuality and things they specifically enjoy within the purview of sexuality. Most often when somebody refers to a “fetish” what they’re REALLY talking about as a kink. Some thing a person finds kinky may be unusual, but they do not NEED it to become aroused or climax.

  Fetishes exist both as ones that do replace the "normal" turn ons someone has and as those that are on the same or equal level as usual stuff

  @Lowiu Thank you for the reply, but as a psychology major, working toward my PhD, A Fetish is considered both a Medical and Psychological disorder with diagnosis codes in both the ICD10 (international classification of diseases and the DSM 5. Diagnostic & Statistical Manual. Fetishism is considered part of the family of sexual disorders called Atypical Paraphilia’s here is an easy to read source that does not require medical training to understand.   But doesn't it say at diagnosis: It is only considered a disorder when fetishistic activities are the foremost source of sexual satisfaction, and become so compelling or unacceptable as to cause distress or interfere with normal sexual intercourse. doesn't that say there's some that aren't the main source

  A fetishe isn't always a mental illness. It stated it May Be, but that only if it takes over and cause harm. If a person does a fetishe once in a while for fun, it would not be considered a mental illness. People and psychologist can miss it thing. Some things turn people on, without causing it to be mental illness.

  First, It (fetishism disorder) does have a Diagnostic code in the DSM5 it’s 302.81 (F65.0). I believe you are both confusing “a Fetish is only a disorder if it negatively affects your life” with the fact that ALL Fetishism by definition IS a disorder, and it’s a life destroying disorder at that! Therefore, If your sexual “thing” does not affect your life negatively, then by definition it cannot be a Fetish! It’s kinda like saying “my diabetes isn't a disease because I'm on insulin which controls the the diabetes, so it does not negatively affect my life, so how can it be a disease”! If YOUR sexual “thing” does not affect your life negatively, then by definition it can not possibly be a fetish, because ALL Fetishes affect your life negatively, as the Wiki link I linked clearly establishes. Any sexual proclivities that do not affect your life negatively, are therefore by definition called kinks! I just don’t understand why people get upset when I inform them that they do NOT have a Fetish, when actually having a Fetish is such a destructive thing to have?

  Thank you Im just interested and do not know about it that well myself So two equal thing e. g. a liking in feet can be a kink once and a fetish in the other case? Depending on how obsessed the person is? And does the use of fetish in non sexual terms make any sense and was just formed after the common use of fetish for just any attraction or liking?

  @Lowiu Yes, ABSOLUTELY that’s precisely it. If a guy (or girl) is into feet it’s a kink, but if their sexual desire of feel is so strong that they cannot orgasm without seeing feet, of if they get arrested for putting a camera in a “shoe changing room” (if that was a thing that existed) then it would become a fetish. Any kink can become a fetish if it is all consuming, affects your life negatively, or you cannot achieve sexual arousal, or sexual climax without seeing that “thing”, or it being present! Feet are an excellent example, so are things like porn, or sniffing women's underwear (for men) basically anything, if it becomes an obsession that takes over your sexual life.

  Yes, exactly. Essentially the easiest way to differentiate the two is, if its something you like it’s a kink, if it’s something you MUST have then it becomes a fetish. Another is: fetishes are extremely harmful psychologically, while kinks are harmless and fun.
