Tell him to got to the sexual health clinic and get checked. That is Erectile disfunction. A condition that all men get at some point in there life time. It is very common and certainly easily treated with the right diagnosis of the root cause. Common root causes are, lack of exercise poor diet, too much alcohol, smoking, stress and other psychological factors. Once the doctor pin points the problem and he starts getting treatment, he will begin to perform again. No biggie.
Just make sure he gets the treatment early enough.

There's also MANY, MANY things that can affect our erections that have NOTHING to do with YOU or how hot you are (just like your desire, it's not solely and directly on the guy, sometimes if you're stressed etc, you're not in the mood maybe right, no different with us). Can also be related to diet or drugs. But drinking and nervousness are enough by themselves, never mind adding them together. Try a time when he's NOT drinking, and as far as nervousness, the more sex you have together, the more comfortable he should become with you, and this should go away and get better. Communication helps a lot to speed this up.

It's not *normal*, but it's also not like a personal failing on the part of either party. Encouragement can go a long way. If it's medical, there are ways to treat that. Be patient, should pass over time. (Again, unless it's medical.)
Nervousness, alcohol, stress psyching yourself out and while other manner of things can all mess with erections.
Is he circumcised? The problem could be nervousness like he said, but it might also be that your vagina doesn't give him strong enough stimulation.
