Why does my granny sit on top of the washing machine?

Question

She says it needs extra weight to hold it down during the fast spin cycle. Bit I'm not sure that's true these days, perhaps it was back in the day but nowadays washing machines are really heavy. She's getting on a bit now and needs a hand climbing on a and I can see she struggles holding the washing machine down cos she shakes and moans. I've offered to do it for her bit she's got her pride and won't let me.

My machine would sometimes walk during the spin cycle a few years ago. That happens because the load inside is unequally distributed.
