I just realized from the anon who said he thinks homosexuality is an abomination that I phrased it badly. I guess homophobia is a fear of homosexuality, but what I really meant was, do you guys know anyone who has a serious issue with gay people?
+1 y
Never mind, I just looked it up and homophobia can refer to the fear or dislike of homosexuality.

Guys and gals, let's not thumb anyone down just because they're homophobic. Yeah, it's not a good thing to be homophobic, but thumbing them down does nothing. Thumb up good answers if you want to, though.

And in case you're wondering, no, I don't know anyone in real life who's homophobic.

Hmm. Disappointing poll results. I was expecting most people to say "no", and I was expecting a lot more people to answer B than A. For some reason I've got the feeling that modern society, especially the most recent generation (young people), is now...

really accepting. I guess not :|

  • I know one, she was kind of my friend 2 years ago, I think it was mainly cause of her religion (she was Muslim) that she disliked gay people. But then as the gays that we knew began sort of coming out of the closet and she made a gay sort-of-friend, I think she relaxed her views a little. I haven't talked to her in a while, so I don't really know if she still is. She just kind of stood out to me cause she's smart and generally reasonable, and then, BAM! She started coming out with this random gay hating.

And of course there are plenty of assholes (mainly guys) who make gay-bashing, homophobic comments all the time, but I don't know if they personally have an actual problem with gay people. I had a friend (who's since moved to NYC, thank god for him) who was given so much sh*t freshman yeat for being gay. And the thing is, as much as people tormented him for being gay, if it came down to it, they'd probably say they had no problem with gay people. It's just, a lot of people use whatever they can against someone to make them feel like sh*t.

And I know plenty of my grandpa's cronies who are, like, Teabaggers or some sh*t, and have said some pretty homophobic stuff. But they're old, so it's pretty much expected.

Well, this was longer than it needed to be. I sort of went off on a tangent in the middle, but I'm back. :P

    • Lol it wasn't too long. Thanks for answering. Islam doesn't condone homosexuality. Islam is a really accepting religion. But it might have been how she was raised that made her homophobic.

  • My old boss at the flower shop, saw me kissing my Norweigan girlfriend one time. He bitterly let it go until my girlfriend brought her bisexual partner in one day and he started kissing his bi-mate.

Two boys kissing --- I know, not the prettiest sight, but the bosses reaction was gold. There were a couple of children nearby and they didn't know how to react, either.

I swear, people need to see beheading videos that way two people of the same sex kissing in public won't shock them in the slightest.

    • Lol @ your last comment

    • Yes, tiger, people need to lighten up and realize there are more disturbing things to see than two people of the same sex kissing. Though in the middle east, it's not disturbing it's against the law and you get executed for it. Sucks to be a homosexual or a women in those ****ries --- God bless America? They curse our capitalism and we curse their narrow-minded religious views. The world is full of stupidity :/

    • Screw the whole f***ing world. Let's make our own country of awesomeness on a random island and have random amazing adventures and fun :D:D:D:D:D

  • I know quite a few people who are homophobic. They are around my age, like 18-25. I don't agree with their opinions but I believe they have a right to their opinions. I believe in Gay rights and have no problem with gay people at all :)

    • It's strange. I didn't think I'd get many answers saying that young people are homophobic but I've gotten a lot... :(

    • there's quite a few people who are homophobic, I know a lot of people that are young that are. Its tough, some do have religious reasons for it, I understand that. As much as I don't agree with them they do have their right to their opinion. That is as far as it gets in the debates I have with them :P

    • Haha yeah if I met someone in real life who was homophobic I'd think twice before debating with them because it probably wouldn't get anywhere.

  • Myself. No hate for homosexuals, though. Gay marriage, gay friends, gay people in public is fine. Gay man getting cozy on me is a big no no.

Was abandoned by my dear mother in the middle of the san fran gay parade when I was 3 or 4. Most terrifying sight was seeing a pink tank rolling my way with a number of burly half-naked guys pelvic thrusting the air and waving the rainbow flag around.

    • That doesn't make you homophobic... If you were just 3 or 4, I don't see how that would be terrifying.

    • Don't know how else to put it; it's how everyone describes my irrational disliking of gay men near me. Two of my closest friends are lesbians, so I guess homophobia doesn't apply to me wholly.

  • Too many. I don't agree with it but that doesn't mean I'll insult a gay person. If they asked me my views I'd be honest with them but I wouldn't make fun of them because of thier sexuality. In my eyes it's wrong but why should they care what I think, it's thier life!

    • As much as I don't agree with you when you say it's wrong, I do really appreciate the attitude you have about letting them be.

    • They're people, they have thier lives I have mine...

  • My evil parents and family are afraid of me. Lol! I come from an old fashioned Mexican family which explains it. Everyone at my school is more than tolerant.

    • Omg that's so sad. I'm sorry :(. But at least you have other people who are supportive. There are a lot of supportive people out there. Never forget that :)

    • Thanks = )

  • Yes my moms a homophobe and I'm bisexual...idt there is anythin wrong with them to me love is love and it can be with anyone

  • They're only phobic when the homos are touching them at a club.

  • I don't know anyone who is seriously homophobic, but I know lots of people, young and old--but mostly older, that are definitely uncomfortable around gay people whether they admit it or not.

  • All the conservatives that I work with lol. If they were to meet a gay, liberal, Muslim who just happened to be agree with socialism, then I think my coworkers would literally burst into flames or explode.

    • Haha okay. Do they talk about it much?

    • Only when they talk about a news story or article. Like when gay marriage bans were lifted in one of the New England states a year or so ago, basically what they said was "...damn liberals".

    • Wow. Do you ever argue/discuss it with them?

  • One guy I can think of who will be 20 now ctually, not seen him for 2 years though. Hmmm... no that may be it. I think that's it.

  • It's my parents generation and older that seem to be more homophobic. That's not to say that there aren't homophobic people of all ages, but it seems to me my generation and younger are generally more accepting.

    • I think so too, but my poll claims otherwise haha. Still, I guess it is a small survey so it doesn't really count.

  • my roommate hates gay people

  • Yes. Unfortunately I do know them.

I don't, however, associate with them - don't need those kinds of friends.

    They're mostly pretty young!

    Which is disappointing but true.

    • That is disappointing :(

  • My father sadly. -_- I'm working on changing his views.

  • Not really

    • That's good :)

    • :D

  • yep 1, he's 26.

    • yea this guy does not like gay people, he hates them.

    • Kinda disappointing that people are like this, don't you think?

    • yea he has a lot of 'self' issues as it is tho, I think that's where it comes from.

  • Phobia comes from the Greek Phobos, "fear" or "morbid fear" and I am not afraid of gay people. I just find them really *gross*. Like hugely fat people at the pool.

    • No matter what the word derives from, someone who's homophobic is someone who dislikes homosexuals, and homophobia is a general term referring to negative attitudes and feelings towards homosexuality.

    • If you don't mind my asking (I'm just curious), are you Christian?

  • I know countries that are homophobic.

    • Yeah, I'm pretty sure in Egypt homosexuality is illegal.

  • So I half Jamaican and therefore know a lot of homophobic people. I love Jamaica and its people and it always makes me so sad how inherently homophobic so many of them are. It's the one thing I hate about the island.

  • i know plenty they all are different ages and resonse ect. people really don't hide being homophibic

    • Hmm... you'd think that in today's society people would hide it.

  • I know a guy, early 40's that is.

  • I know 3. Me my girlfriend and our friend. Me and my girlfriend are 15 and our friend is 16. (: and I'm damn proud of it

    • So what makes you dislike homosexuals?

    • that wasn't your question

    • i read this question wrong my bad haha

  • I knew this nazi guy who hated them and this other girl who didn't like them. So I guess I have.

  • Yup. Me.

It's a bit odd that it's called "homophobia", since phobia is fear. I don't fear them. I simply despise them. Should be called "homohatred" or something.

    • So why do you hate homosexuality? It's not like people who are actually homosexual have a choice. They didn't choose to be gay; they just happen to be gay. It's the same with racism - racist people hate people for their skin colour/ethnicity, which they didn't choose.

    • Because some believe hatred starts with fear.

    • No, there's no reason to fear homosexuals... unless you're f***ed up in the head and you're afraid they're gonna wanna have sex with you when you're the same sex as they are and you're straight.
