The gender of a human is determined by its chromosomes. Two X chromosomes means female, while one X and one Y chromosome means male. However, there are diseases where a person might be born with more than the normal amount of two (Klinefelter syndrome, XXYY, etc.), or they are born with both male and female sex organs (hermaphrodites), but these are not specified as genders.

Recently, people have been saying that they feel different than the gender they were “assigned at birth”. This has sprung up countless new “gender identities”. Some people might argue that they are whatever gender they feel like, even if it is one they just made up.

If we count gender as what we were born with (chromosomes, sex organs), then we can say that there are 2 genders, male and female. If we count gender as what we feel like, than there can be an infinite amount of genders.

I think that gender is something created by society, and so it's up to the society, and by extension, individual perception, as to how many genders there are. But it's also not really relevant to any substantive ideas, at least that I'm aware of.

Scientifically... Zero. Men in the womb were a mix between female and male before gender is determined. This is why males have nipples that don't really work for anything, and females have clits. Clits are what remains of a penis, it is why they're so sensitive. It's ALL determined by chromosome changes.

  To clarify a bit. For those that say infinite, the variety is psychological. How a person feels. Gender is physiological, a dick for male. A vagina for female. Rare exceptions, like I say, of intersex and hermaphrodites.

Hence there is always an American language, which is NOT English, but a natural corruption of English as spoken by English. Our defining dictionary is the Oxford English dictionary.

  Okay? Just because somethings definition is defined doesn't mean it's set in stone. Swastikas come from a symbol for peace, almost all people see it as a nazi symbol. Gender by definition is physical but most of the population see and is understand it as otherwise.

I believe that you can have different combos of male and female traits... to see it in a more mathematical sense 20% male 80% female or 40% male and 60% female. But I don't think there's something other than male or female or not feeling like either or.

  Logic is well-supported by science, specifically evidence based practice. Have penis/testicles? Male genitalia. You're male. Have vagina/ovaries? Female genitalia. You're female. Now what you IDENTIFY with, with or without self-mutilation, is entirely your call. There are infinite identities. But scientifically only 2 genders (owing to reproduction and how our species are born). If there were more than 1 gender you'd have to be born that way. And hermaphrodites are mutated, but they just get 2 choose 1 of the 2 genders. For anyone else, you can be male, or female, and even if you identify differently, you STILL only choose one of the 2 genders. But again, identities are infinite. Genders are 2. Only 2.
