Ladies, what're your periods like?

Mine are super irregular, and I can either have NO side affects (cramps, headaches etc), or terrible affects. Currently, I am having mind numbingly terrible cramps and head aches, I'm very irritable and all I want is peanut m&m's.
Ibuprofen helps but would midol help better?
Also, what can I do to help make my period more regular? I can go 2-3 months without getting my period and then I randomly do again.
do you prefer tampons, pads or the weird cups, and why?
And any other tips/facts are always welcome!

Yea I get very irritable and sad before my period, and VERY irritable and mad during it. I can never really tell when im about to get it though because my PMS can start like 3 weeks before and last the entire time or only like 1 day before.

Also, my mom and step dad are weird about the BC, they think im gonna have sex if im on it and i dont want sex, id rather do everything but that. And I've never been to a gyno before so I don't know if that plays a factor or anything

  • It seems I experience everything under the sun when I am on my period. I get cramps right in my uterus or vaginal wall. It is so painful I feel like it could be the equivalent to giving birth to a demon child or something. The pain only lasts for a day, luckily. I take Pamprin Multi-Purpose and sometimes Ibuprofren. Pamprin is more effective for me since it is caffeine free, and I switched from Midol to Pamprin because Midol gave me panic attacks and nausea due to the caffeine it contained.
I am super moody, sometimes depressed for no reason and could cry over trivial things. Very heavy the first two days (I used to wear tampons, but it resulted in infections or a terrible odor, so I switched to cotton pads that absorb well.) I will only use a tampon when I really need to on my heavy days. Pads leave me with little to no change in my PH levels and are more comfortable for me. My period can be quite irregular. Sometimes it's at the beginning of the month, in the middle, or the end of the month. I have a hard time tracking the mark.
HUNGRY. Cravings to the max. I could eat a whole pizza and want something sweet afterward. I just want it all 😂
And I'll be honest, I feel really horny when I'm on my period, more than usual. Sorry if that was TMI >﹏<

All in all, every emotion I experience is intensified.

  • Painful and messy, mostly. I don't generally have cramps, but I have really intense back pain that lasts the first couple of days. My cravings generally go back and forth between salty and sweet, but I never want something that is salty AND sweet (like chocolate covered pretzels or salted caramel [both of which I usually like]). I know my period is coming because a week before, I'm just constantly hungry. Turns out, with some women their bodies feel the need to consume more calories before the period comes as a form of preparation.

It's kind of irritating having people go, "Are you on your period?" when I get mad, because that's not how my period affects me. My mood swings tend to be more like, "everything is cute/sad/inspiring and now I'm crying," and "I really want to have babies, I'm going to spend the next few hours planning what I'll do when I'm ready."

Now that I'm on birth control, I don't have them very often (maybe one every three months). My first two after I started birth control were completely bizarre though.

  • Midol works better and faster for me. Don't eat it on an empty stomach though, just eat anything with it. Take it the first hint of your period coming on.

As for your periods being irregular, have you ever brought this up to a doctor? I remember you making posts about mental illness awareness, is that something you deal with on a regular basis and take meds for too? Mental illness can cause irregular menstrual periods as can medications, hormonal imbalances, and certain female conditions. It's worth talking to a doctor. If there's something underlying, that will be your best option to make your time of the month a more reasonable experience.

I'm a med student so you can ask me any questions if you want.

    • Never been to a gyno or a doctor about my periods. And no but I need to.

    • Your pediatrician is a fine person to talk to as well. Menstrual irregularity is quite common and you're also very young so it could be a variation of normal and temporary.

    • I don't even know if i have a pediatrician

  • They're regular, but I get forgetful and busy and hate being caught off guard, so I have an app that tracks it for me and gives me a head's up lol.

I don't really get cramps, headaches, or mood swings. Some cravings and fatigue, but nothing major. It's just an annoying thing to deal with. I sympathize with girls who have harsher symptoms, though. My best friend has awful cramps and her mood can be all over the place for the first few days, so I get it.

I definitely prefer tampons. Pads are uncomfortable and clunky to me.

    • Oh, about what you can do to make it more regular - getting on birth control pills can help regulate your cycle and reduce negative effects. Also, Midol or Advil can help with cramps and headaches.

  • Extremely heavy for a couple of days and then light for about 2 days, usually almost clear for almost a day and then it comes back slightly heavy for half a day and then finishes.

In terms of cramps, they're almost unbearable the first two days when it's super heavy, so bad at times that I feel nauseous.

Mood wise I get really sad for a few days before it begins and stay that way through the first couple days.

I use menstrual cups on my heavy days and I got liners on the others.

    • *light liners

  • Mine used to be bad like that. I got on the pill because of the severe irregularity where I may not get my period for two to six months. When I did, they last so long and were very heavy. Now, they come like clockwork every month, aren't too heavy, and only cause cramps the day before or first day.

Try Midol. See if it helps you.

  • Mine last between 3-5 days. The first day is the worst. It's usually always a heavy flow. I get cramps, back pains, dizzy spells. I can barely stand up. I can barely sit down. I feel bloated. I cry about everything and nothing.
