as far as i can see, it doesn't really. marriage is an institution originally invented to prevent men from easily getting out of their responsibility in terms of rising children and in terms of enforcing relationship rules on a legal level, so that women don't getabused or fucked over easily. it was meant to optimize the survival of the human species, by enforcing rules that make it more likely for children being adequately rised.
yes it theoretically also "to some extend" protects men from being fucked over but that's mostly theory and rarely actual practice, cause it's usually men that have to lose more. women go for men higher in socio-economic status, not lower, which is why they typically have less to lose. of course exceptions do exist.
for men, marriage has no real world advantages as far as i see. it takes their freedom to have sex with whomever they want (cause typically women are not the ones trying to fuck many men but men are typically trying to fuck many women) and gives them responsibilities in return. not exactly a sweet deal but i'm open to be proven wrong.
