Should the word "faggot" be considered hate speech or should it be protected under free speech of the constitution (U. S. A.)?

Here in my hometown, I saw on the news yesterday, a man complaining about his neighbor calling him a faggot (which he is) on multiple occasions, he recorded the man calling him that word and reported it to the authorities but there's nothing that could be done because the word "faggot" is protected under free speech. #HateOrFreeSpeech
Should the word faggot be considered hate speech or should it be protected under free speech of the constitution (U. S. A.)?

  • I find a lot of words offensive, but, living in the US, and the Freedoms we have, I choose not to associate with those, that use those words.
Banned, or illegal, as 'Hate speech' FUCK NO! And YES, and 'offensive' word, to some, to make the point!!
In the US we have the FREEDOM to choose to change the channel, on the radio, or Cable, or not follow on social media! That is our choice, and people died to defend that right!
Once you start banning certain words, because some might be 'offensive' to some, it becomes easier to ban more words, and then more, of other things. . .
Ever read 1984, by George Orwell?
It is a slippery slope, when you start banning something, because a small group gets all upset! Pretty soon you are banning newspapers, for printing what they do. Then people who speak out, start disappearing. IT HAS HAPPENED! IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN, unless we learn from history, and learn to respect each other, and understand the cultural differences, rather than defaulting to the stereotypes!
Respectful speech, and not just the current 'DRAMA HYPE' and 'FAKE NEWS' to incite hate, and arouse fear, and divide people!
The US has never been more divided, among party lines, and socio-economic lines, ever! Why? The MEDIA is manipulating us, for ratings, and advertising sales!!

  • HELL NO!!!

First point, the concept of 'hate speech' is legal nonsense that can be used & abused by any powers that be to silence any opposition.

Secondly, that's anti-U. K. discrimination! Behold the classic British dish:

Faggots, an indigenous U. K. meat dish

Hell, a British eatery (Fanny’s Rest Stop Café) was censored by Google Ads for advertising about their specialty: faggots with peas & onion gravy.

(Personally, I consider this to be ironic, given the definition & use of 'fanny' in the U. K. context.)

    • That meal looks absolutely delicious.

    • Yeah, 1day I'd like to taste it, but I'd probably have to go to the U. K. to do that, since there are no British restaurants anywhere in my area. Food names are weird, funny, and/or offensive if you really think about it (and find offense). Imagine my surprise when I discovered that a traditional Filipino rice-cake dessert ᜉᜓᜆᜓ ("puto") means something entirely different in Spanish! Back in the Philippines, we enjoyed a beverage we just called 'pearl shake' in English. When we got here to the States, it took years for me to find it again in my region, much more to find a good quality version easily accessible here. They called it 'boba', a term that was utterly foreign to me. I just discovered the corresponding Chinese characters from the nation that invented it: 波霸 ("boba"; 「big boobs」). How the HELL does 波 ("bo"; n.「wave/ripple/storm/surge」 or abbr. 「Poland/Polish」) + 霸 (n.「lord/tyrant/feudal chief」 or v.「to rule by force/to usurp」) = 'big boobs' in Chinese‽ So, now 'I love boba!' can mean 2 entirely different things!

  • I’m all for free speech but it’s not your right to harass someone or try and publicly shame someone you don’t even know. People shouldn’t have the right to just harass and be mean to people, nobody should just have to put up with shitty people just because they exist. I think laws would be extremely helpful!

    • You're contradicting yourself.

    • I’m sorry HOW? Can you explain that one? I’m genuinely curious because I’m not even sure if you comprehend what the word contradicting means.

    • You can't claim you'll all for free speech, but soon right after say they shouldn't have the right to publically shame someone (in this case with a word or words)

  • The Supreme Court has ruled numerous times that hate speech is protected by the first amendment. It’s why hate groups are allowed to express their views publicly. What constitutes hate speech is a matter, although I’d say the word in question is probably hateful when used in its commonly known context.

  • I dont support homosexuality but i also think that F word is very disrespectful and i would never use it. I saw Doja Cat got in trouble for using that word too

  • He can say it cause it is free speech. It's not against the law but if he worked for me, I'd tell him to move on, that we don't need people like him in our company and if he was a friend, I would distance myself. That's the thing people don't understand. Their right to say it is protected but it doesn't mean there won't be consequences.

    • I was going to respond to the question with a rather long diatribe. Then I saw your reply. You said what I think eloquently and concisely. Thank you!

    • @Craftsman You're more than welcome.

  • Faggots should be banned.

  • Good question. I don't know the answer, but it's an interesting thing to think about.

    • The answer is easy, it should be protected under free speech. You having sensitive feelings shouldn't prohibit someone from expressing themselves as long they don't verbally threaten you with violence.

  • If you let words hurt you go hide under a rock or something.

  • Free speech

  • Things only have value if we give it value. Things are not worth shit if we say it's not worth shit easy as that. As humans, if we are told not to do something, we want to do it for two reasons. First is if we are told not to do it, it now holds value in our heads. Second reason is we are assholes who do what we want to do or say. So the easy way around the whole bullshit mess is keep it off the hate crime speech thing you had mentioned and it should level itself out. But here is my take on it. How about just don't call a homosexual a faggot. It's not hard. It's called being a good person. Do I think people shouldn't say faggot? No, I think people should say whatever they want. Call people faggots if you want to but be a good person about it. If any word offends someone else, try not to use that word around them. You don't have to stop saying it. It's called being a good person. Now if someone overhears you and some buddy's talking shit to each other and hears a word they are offended by, depending on the situation like if your at a kids birthday party at Chucky Cheese and saying some weird shit. That's probably not really being a good person and you probably should get the business from whomever. But if the same thing happens and you guys are bbq-ing at your house and some asshole just happens to be driving by on his Vespa hears something that he gets offended by? Fuck that guy.

yes list goes on. I always say that Karma is a bitch that is one way
    to look at it.

  • "Hate speech" is a made up political word designed to manipulate. Free speech is free speech period. Free speech laws protect unpopular speech not popular speech.

    • Do you think literally all speech should be allowed?

    • The old rule of not yelling fire (or alahu ackbar ) in a crowded theater I would think makes sense. Other than that any speech should be allowed. That fagot should be horse whipped for being a stinking commie.

  • Its hate speech, free speech when you want to express your opinion in a constructive way. Without profanity, discuss politics, economy, and laws without restrictions. But going after a person and using sexual language to humiliate him has nothing to do with freedom or speech. No one is free to abuse another

  • The first amendment goes both ways.

  • Any word by itself is free speech.

  • nope

Haha. it has to because it's the intensity of a voice and the glare in the eye that's makes it a promising candidate for abuse ergo abuse directed at a person and sure as hell shouldn't be directed at a child

  • It is protected.

Hate speech is not a legally defined thing in the US.

    • I think it is. You can't legally say kill muslims.

    • Threats of violence are legally defined, but not as hate speech.

    • Yes, actually you can. As long as you are not trying to incite others.

  • Yes , it should be. Not nice calling someone that.

  • Generally no, hate speech should be protected, but not necessarily tolerated.

Obviously this is hateful and it would be hard to justify, but what if society got to the point where just disagreeing with a black president (like obama) caused others to call you racist and label any criticism of him as hate speech...

  • I dont get offended when people call me straight.

    • LOL.. yeah.

  • just because someone doesn't like it, doesn't mean he doesn't have the right to say it. the reason why hate speech should be protected is because if it isn't it will lead to the end of free speech all together

  • Its just a bundle of sticks.

  • Free Speech literally means Free Speech which includes Hate Speech. Banning words go down a dangerous path
