When you think of “latina,” what’s the first thing that pops into your head?

So, I'm (roughly) half Mexican, though I'm half white/european and I grew up solidly middle class and didn't identify with "Mexican culture" at all - I'm pure California. BUT... at family reunions/events on my dad's side, there were a lot of VERY ethnic, very cultural Mexicans, and so, unfortunately, when I think "latina", the first images that pop into my head are the girls I'd see at these events. Very ethnic, many slightly thuggish (some more so), usually wearing single-colored satin dresses, painted on eyebrows, bright eyeshadow, big round earrings, and either big hair (80s) or slicked down hair (90s). More recently, you can add lots of tattoos. UGH.

I can't find a really good pic, but this one isn't TOO far off of what you might see at a family event:

This is a prom pic, so imagine "somewhat less 'prom,' more ethnic" and you'd have a good idea of what I'm talking about. And I am SO NOT into this look AT ALL.

But there are tons of latina girls who do NOT look or act like this, and THOSE girls I find as attractive as any other kind of girl. I just have to take a split second to drive the first kind of latina out of my mind, and then I'm okay.

Believe me, no one wishes for that more than I do! For some balance, I've met two girls from Brazil, one from Uruguay, and one from Venezuela, as well as many Mexican and part-Mexican girls, who I thought were crazy hot, and looked NOTHING like the cholas I posted. Thank god!

Still have only had limited interactions with Latinas (not out of lack of interest). Formed most of my impressions from the media. But I dig the impression I get however applicable or not it is. :-D It is quite a contrast to the shy and giggly Japanese stereotype girl which I never liked so much.

I grew up very far away from any possible contact with Latinas (or Spanish speakers in general) besides occasional tourists, so the two main stereotypes I understood were that Latinas are loud and outgoing and that they make a lot of unique music.
