Why do people think clinically underweight is normal, underweight is curvy, average is overweight, and chubby is fat?

wodynology.files.wordpress.com/.../fat-score.jpg

I'm talking about this picture. #3 is slightly underweight but okay, #4 looks average but is deemed chubby, #5 is chubby but is deemed fat. The other ones are so thin they don't even have boobs, like what? What's wrong with people? How is that desirable? No wonder people are getting boob implants in the West. This scoring system is broken, does this actually represent what people think?

Why do people think clinically underweight is normal, underweight is curvy, average is overweight, and chubby is fat?

This problem seems awfully relevant to the issues with the image of females in advertising, designed to make females hate themselves for not looking like those photoshopped idealized puppets... no one looks like that...

What Girls & Guys Said

  • They're examples. Get over it. Its not a big deal.

    In reality its useless to create anything like this anyway, since they are of different women, so would look different regardless of body weight. For example girls 3 and 4 seem to be at very similar levels of bodyfat, the fat is just stored in different places due to genetics, giving 4 a little bit of fat on her belly.

    I would however agree that 5 isn't fat and that 4 isn't chubby. But again I need to point out how useless such a chart is anyway, since the difference between 5 and 6 are huge. Really I'd argue 4 is average, 5 is chubby and there should be a 5.5 that is fat. I'd disagree that 3 is underweight in any way, shape or form. Even 2 is likely within a healthy range.

    Furthermore don't try and make this a gender issue, this effects men as well, albeit in the opposite direction. This is me around 7 months ago ( https://imgur.com/hE3lG3w,Stn3rwl#0 ) according to BMI I was right where I should be in terms of weight, yet people here told me I was skinny and scrawny, that I needed to go to the gym. This is me around 2 months ago ( https://imgur.com/hE3lG3w,Stn3rwl#1 ) according to BMI I was slightly overweight, yet people would say I look normal or average and that I need to go to the gym (DYEL).

    'Why do people think clinically underweight is normal, underweight is curvy, average is overweight, and chubby is fat?'

    I think you are taking this chart far too seriously - got any proof the 'normal' one is clinically underweight?

    • This question is all just a load of beta white knight phaggotry really. Poor women they have it soooo hard!!!

    • good for you

  • I will never understand

  • Having bodies like 2 and 3 doesn't mean you're clinically underweight, wth.
    Also, way to body sham.

    • This is not the first time I heard that, I think it's worse that they shame the average as "chubby" and "chubby" people as "fat".

    • There is no body shamming in that photo. The only one shamming is you with your "The other ones are so thin they don't even have boobs, like what? What's wrong with people? How is that desirable? No wonder people are getting boob implants in the West" B. S. It is completely normal for people to have bodies like 3 and not be underweight. I'd even argue 2 since I have a friend like that and is perfectly healthy. To me 1-4 is normal. 5 is "chubby" and there's nothing wrong with that. Judging from your posts you think its not okay to body sham, yet you think its perfectly okay to do it to "slim" people? Lol, okay. Have fun trolling.

    • #1 is waaaay underweight. She doesn't have *any* fat on her bones. And I am not shaming anyone directly.

  • It is what it is. You can't really change people's perception.

    • Sure you can, mine is different and their concept system is inherently broken.

  • It's not like that picture you posted is the official scale that everyone uses. Personally say 2-4 are in range of normal, 5 is chubby. I dont consider 3 to be underweight maybe 0 but not 3. Also there are bodies that are in between these sizes listed. Their weight isn't even listed, you're just going off their image. Also I doubt all these girls in the picture are the same height and that effects whether or not they'd be considered under/over weight. I agree with you about the whole advertising thing but I think its because they photoshop it to the point it's unattainable, that and the fact they sexualize everything. However just because someone is on the skinny side doesn't mean they are unhealthy. Some people have a naturally high metabolism so they don't gain weight easily. That in combination with exercise can yield the results in 1-3, it doesn't mean they are unhealthy. Someone with a high metabolism might have just as hard of a time to gain weight as an obese person trying to lose it, the difference is that the obese person is actually unhealthy. Personally I'd say pics 2-3 probably have a healthier lifestlye than the girls in 4-5. I think obesity is a more common and more severe problem than anorexia. I believe in balance and that extremes should be avoided. Based on mass appeal I'd say that 9,6,7,0 have little appeal, 2,3,4 ,8 probably have the most mass appeal,1,5 are slightly below/slightly above the mass appeal group but they still aren't bad.

  • I'm like a 2 or an 8, and I really don't care about my weight. I feel bad for others, because they think they're fat. My friends are all like a 5 or an 8. I have a couple who are a 1 or like a.5, but none of us really care about our weight, even though we all call ourselves fat during lunch because we eat chips everyday lol

  • 3 isn't underweight at all and she would probably be at the 27+ on the bmi scale. She doesn't look bad tho. But she's not underweight all all. (I googled it and she has a BMI of 25)

    • No way that is BMI 25. It is 21 at max.

    • Can't you see her breast? They are big and that's not common in people who have a BMI of 21. Her BMI is probably more than 25

  • Taste is relevant, your taste is not absolute and you prove yourself ignorant by asking this question.

    • o really

  • lol is the a American rule to make up for the high obesity rate? cause I totally think it's bullshit

    • Well they enforce rating 0 as desirable no matter what your body shape is :p

    • I don't like 0, who wants to bang a skeleton

    • Exactly!

  • Because the human race is retarded.

    • I am so tempted to give you MHO for that but there are more informative answers.

    • Lol I can easily give more details, but the closed mind is do ludicrous I didn't feel like it.

    • @Sexxbunnyy , Retarded compared to WHAT?

  • See, with how overweight most Americans are, 4# is both average AND chubby. Because average in the USA is actually to be fat. And 5# is a fatso.

    No offense, but you haven't presented any medical link to actually demonstrate that 2# or 3# are in fact medically underweight. Your opinion doesn't make it so, just as the fact that being overweight is average does not make being overweight attractive at all.

    And i'd say that scoring scale thing is spot on, aside from 0 and 1 GENUINELY looking anorexic. 2 and 3 are babes!

  • Because the way image is handled here is so broken and fucked up of course shit like this is going to happen. Until the media changes the way it portrays women this will continue to stay this way.

    • But just because the media is a buffet of lies in terms of female physique (designed specifically to make people bad about themselves of course), that doesn't mean people actually need to buy into it. I didn't. Why do others?

    • It depends on a number of things. Simply because you didn't buy into this system doesn't mean that everyone else isn't going to. The way people idolize others is a problem in and of itself, and the biggest way to go about changing it is to try and tackle gender stereotyping (primarily in the media and other outlets).

  • I went from having a body similar to #2 to having a body like #5 in within five years.
    However, I really don't consider #5 to be fat. It actually seems like the women in #5 is curvy.

    The thing is people should start loving themselves for who they are and stop worrying about what other people think.

    The media+society= low self-esteem

    • "The media+society= low self-esteem" True. They make a living off of that.

    • Exactly!! Then people wonder why girls develop eating disorders. Nobody's perfect!!

    • I thought it was pretty obvious where the problem comes from. Did you see the update on this question?

    • Show All
  • I would be considered fat but fuck what they say lol!!!

  • because fashion designers are gay and don't appreciate women

    • I did actually read that before, that it's homosexual males designing clothes they'd want to see on homosexual men.

  • The chart looks right to me, the human body has no need to store any fat ever with the amount of available food for consumption. If you have any fat on your body you are eating more calories than you burn. Why do people think they need to store extra calories on their body?
    Excessive fat is comparable to extra foreskin and there is no use for it

    • The foreskin serves protective functionalities and keep an the glans moist so that it doesn't feel like sandpaper without lube. Also, a calorie is not a calorie. Fat storage is energy reserve and also helps preserving heat. An excess of it is unhealthy, but that does not mean it is completely useless.

    • If people just ate when they were hungry we wouldn't need images #4 - #7 but we insist on eating at least 3 times a day and snacking in between those.. and then call themselves big boned or curvy with a hormonal imbalance that causes them to get fat

  • You obviously are just using this as a way to snub and tell the world what YOU think is acceptable. I have never heard these generalizations before.

    • I find that surprisingly unlikely. These words are in everyday use - and people tend to claim everyone is always overweight, lol.

  • I agree. it's horrible. I'm super skinny and for the longest time my doctor said I was normal, that I was fine the way I was, why could I possibly want to gain weight. Welp, turns out i'm 15 pounds under weight. stupid bitch.

    • O_o... that's unusual from a doctor, what the hell.

    • yeah she's dumb. I don't go to the doctors anymore. I just go to the hospital lol

  • You're 5'7 and 135 lbs and you're shaming someone that has a body of number 3? You have no room to talk. You're skinny as fuck. I'm 5'8 at 180 lbs with 8% body fat. You're either skinny fat or you're skinny at low % body fat but with virtually no muscle mass.

    0 = ugly
    1 = ugly
    2 = nice
    3 = nice
    4 = ugly
    5 = nice
    6 = ugly
    7 = ugly
    8 = nice
    9 = ugly

    Now, could there be a girl that is a 4 and looks nice.. Yes. Could there be a girl that is a 5 that looks ugly? Yes. It's not about how much you weigh.. It's about how your body carries that weight. The 5 girl may be fatter than the 4 girl, but the 5 girl carries her weight better than the 4 girl. That's why I gave 5 a nice rating and 4 an ugly rating.

    • I certainly don't have too much muscle mass. I do not know my body fat percentage. But girls my height and my weight tend to be put down for being "too heavy" which is simply untrue.

    • A girl that is 5'7 at 135 lbs is too heavy? That's news to me. I've never seen that happen. I'm not talking about the media, I'm talking about your every day average citizen. Also, like I said, it's not about how much someone weighs. It's how they carry that weight.

      Just look at this. Same girl (height unknown) but she weighs more in the right picture than she does in the left picture. Yet, she is definitely skinnier in the right picture in comparison to the left picture.

    • Right. Muscle does weigh more than fat... I don't think I'm that skinny, though. I find myself average, although I really could use some more muscle.
