Why do women generally have wider hips and larger breasts than men?

Superb Opinion

  • Unlike men, women get pregnant, grow babies inside them, and then they have to give birth to those babies, which means a baby needs a way out of the mother. That way out is called a vagina, but there has to be enough room in the pelvis bone and hip bones to allow a child to pass through - thus, women evolved to have wider hips to allow this. That's the basics of evolution: minor mutations that prove to be beneficial to reproduction or survival tend to give those who have those traits a higher chance of survival and reproduction, while those who lack those traits have a lower chance, so that, after many generations, the trait gets reinforced and spreads throughout the species.

As for breasts, humans are the only mammals who have enlarged breasts when not pregnant, and one of the reasons for that is to allow women to be identified from a distance. In early, pre-"civilized" societies, it was common for one tribe or village to "steal" women from another (which helped widen the gene pool and strengthen the species), and breasts helped not only identify the women, but ensure that they were post-pubescent and able to reproduce.

Every physical feature on the human body evolved the way it is for a reason, and the basis for those reasons was survival and reproduction. Humans walking upright, being hunter-gatherers, and having to adjust to different climates and diets dictated our digestive system, body size, bone density, percentage of muscle, and so on. The size and location of our ears and eyes is optimized for how we use them. Where we grow hair is optimized for our climate and environment. It goes on and on, but everything comes down to evolution, which optimizes for survival and reproduction.

Most Helpful Guy

  • Generally? It's more like a rule. You never see a man walk around with breasts, unless they're obese. It's biological for child-bearing reasons of course.

Most Helpful Girls

  • Our hips are wider because our pelvis is shaped to allow childbirth. Our breasts are more developed and contain the mammary glands for us to provide milk for babies.

  • ... have you never heard the term child hearing hips or?

    • What do you mean?

    • Oof I meant child bearing*

    • Sasha, have you ever seen a pregnant woman. She needs space in her belly for her baby.

  • Having kids.

    • How?

  • Congratulations on winning a Troll of the day award.
In the meantime start swotting up on your Human Biology lessons. smh

    • No doubt. High school kids learn basic anatomy in highschool.

  • For making babies.

  • One of the great mysteries of the universe.

    • Really?

  • Gravity and centrifugal force works different on them?

    • What?

    • Well: the biological reasons are obvious and well known. So... what you seek is a mechanical or a philosophical answer. I gave both :)

  • Birthing and raising children.

    • How?

    • Breasts create and store milk for breast feeding. And during that process they actually do increase in size. Your hips are wider because it makes child birth easier this why wide hips are called child bearing hips.

  • Generally i have larger breast than women

    And larger hips

  • Doh!
So that you can have babies.

  • children

    • How?

    • did you not get any education about how babies come into being?

    • What do you mean?

  • Uh... because babies come out of you lot

  • Wider hips because they grow babies in that area for 9 months.

Larger breasts because they mammary glands that men don't have so they can feed their babies.

  • It starts with chromosomes and continues with genetics.

  • So they can squeeze out them babbies.

  • Stop...

  • For babies!

    • How?

    • So babies can come down the birth canal. Breast are for feeding the baby!

  • For delivering and nurturing children

  • For child holing and milk feeding

  • Uh for giving birth and feeding the baby... duh

  • Child birth obviously. Try to stay awake during health class once in a while.

    • How is it obvious?

    • You're not to bright are you?

  • To be able to carry children in her womb.
