Because I want to get a decent tan, and don't want my tanlines to be wildly out of kilter with my underwear. A white bum doesn't look good with thong underwear if the legs are tanned. That said, it can be flattering to receive polite attention, and I find the style is comfortable, too.
I have never, ever heard anybody say (and I know quite a few people who wear thong bikinis) that they wear them to encourage people to rate their asses or spank them. As in never. I've also never heard anybody saying they wear them to find a one night stand, either.
For whom do you care about your tanlines in underwear? For yourself? For your boyfriend? Doesn't it bother you that while you are preparing a perfect tanline for your boyfriend, for an intimate situation, you are showing the same intimate parts to everyone?
For both of us? I don't see tanning on a beach as 'showing intimate parts to everyone', anyway? A thong covers the intimate parts. I'd feel different if it was in a restaurant, in the office etc, but it's all about the context.
And also, "it can be flattering to receive polite attention". What are the boundaries of polite attention? What would be still flattering, and what is already undesirable?

A relatively fit girl with a beautiful bum can look stunning with a thong bikini on, and can definitely show off her shapely figure a little more than with a "regular" old-fashioned boring bottom that fully covers her butt and restricts her freedom.
If my girlfriend wore a thong bikini at a public beach, I would not stop admiring her, looking at her butt, kissing her, caressing her bare cheeks and feeling very proud of her confidence. @na2398 Is she "confident" or lacking self-esteem? Sexually objectifying yourself (which she has just stated) has never been a sign of self-esteem. On a shallow level it seems like a "confidence booster", but on a deeper and more meaningful level she is only de-powering herself to fulfill superficial ideals.
I think some girls might lack intelligence or personality and want reassurance they can still attract guys with their bodies. I used to hang out with a girl who flunked out of 3 colleges and she loved to make fun of my appearance because her personality was horrible and her iq and life experience was low and her only good quality was her slim body - she wanted affirmation she looked good.

For me there's a few reasons, like, I totally hate a bikini tan line so a thong bikini is great for that.
Secondly, I do spend a lot of time making sure I keep fit and looking good, so I kinda want to flaunt it a bit.
And finally, thongs are just more comfortable for me than a full bikini.
