Only way you break a hip from SEX is if you have severe osteoporosis! It takes automobile, wrap around a pole accidents to break hips. They're the strongest, largest bones in your body. You can wear them out, but breaking them is from extreme old age and bone loss and a sedentary lifestyle. You do normal weight-bearing exercise like walking and a little weight lifting, kettle bells, dumb bells, your bones will keep you in the chips and not chip off your old block!

Marathons are extremely hard on the body. As you've said: too many miles. You've word yourself out. Ride a bike. Far more forgiving. Walk. Body Pump is high reps, light weights. Great workout program. You can work your way up to an hour workout. Start with the first two workouts: squats and warmups. Grand total of 11 minutes. Be easy on yourself. If the doctor suggests that marathons should be in your rearview mirror, put them there. You will likely be able to do 10Ks till you drop, once your hip heals. You've got to do weight bearing exercises to get back in shape. Light weights, high reps, walk, bike. You'll get there. Give yourself a year.

@Screenwriter I ran for many years and I was relatively heavy for a marathon runner. I competed at 175 lbs at 6 feet tall. My best time was a 3:03. The doc said no running but I do ride a bike and use an elliptical trainer or stair climber. I work out with weights 4 or 5 times a week. I have been a gym rat my whole life. almost. Walking is a big part of my rehab. In a couple of weeks I will probably have outpatient rehab as well. I am doing good so far. Thanks for your input. 😊😊😊

@Screenwriter Yeah, maybe I did. I really enjoyed it. I trained with a bunch of guys and ran about 10-15 races a year including one marathon. I did 50 miles a week most of the year. I ran a couple of 10 Ks with my kids so that was cool. Now it's just one more thing on the ever growing list of things I can't do anymore.

Seven miles a day with no rest is a LOT of miles. You MIGHT be able to do 3 miles every OTHER day four days a week. Keep you healthy and won't break you down. Fill in the rest of the time with biking and weights. AND REST!!! Has nothing to do with age. It's all about balance.

Dude. That is SIMPLY TOO MANY MILES. I don't care about hard/easy. It's too much. Either learn to do a few miles: 5 or fewer, or stop running. You have to moderate. There can't be any more 20 mile days. You will end up crippling yourself. If that's your goal... Get on the bike. 20 miles on a bike is fairly safe. Your doctor must be frustrated. Take care of yourself. Maybe you think you'll stay young if you rack up all these miles. You;ll overage your spine and joints. You don't need all that banging. Swim, too.

@Screenwriter I had to give it up years ago. I had friends that ran 70-80 miles a week but they were skinny little guys. I looked like a bear next to these guys. My wife used to watch my races and she said a small group of skinny little guys would go by, then a few seconds she would see me, a few seconds after that everyone else would go by.

175 at six feet tall isn't a big guy. It's just not a skinny guy. I hung out with this dude who was 6 1 and about 180. He said he weighed 200, but he was too slim. He USED to weight that. Lost lots of weight after an accident where he was rebuilt from the pelvis out. But he was also in constant pain. He was lean and muscular. His butt was the only fat on his body. Very cute butt. So if he was built like that and an inch taller than you, I don't know how you call yourself a "bear." He was "fine" in my book. Those mosquitoes buzzing past you aren't sexy at all. But I know why they were buzzing past you too: They were UNDERweight. I bet you look good in bathing trunks. In fact, McConaughey weighed 175 at 5 11 at HIS finest. He went on that weird diet for Dallas Buyers Club and looked dead, then stayed thin for a few years. Now he looks normal again. Maybe there are women who like skinny little runner men. I ain't one of 'em. However, your damage came from too sources: too many miles and not being a mosquito. Be kind to your poor banged up body. Think of your future! WALKING AT 80! STANDING AT 90! Doing weights and situps at 60! Climbing a ladder to put up Christmas lights at 55! See yourself doing all those great things at all those ages! You don't be if you insist on running. Good luck at downsizing.

@Screenwriter Distance runners should be able to take their height in inches and multiply it by two and that is the maximum number of pounds they should weigh. 72 X 2= 144. I was about 30 pounds overweight.

You'd look like a running skeleton at 144 pounds. Ewww. But I suspect all those guys weigh so little because of the pounding. And then there's people who are just naturally muscular, which is sounds like you are. Should you starve yourself to weigh that little? Could you maintain that weight. If your natural weight and build are 175, then that's how the cookies crumble. But sometimes your body type isn't ideal for the sport you love. I can understand loving running. I've loved it too. But the shin splints and knee pain I had from running were regular occurences when I started doing it in my early 20s. I never ran much: 10 miles a week at most. Out three or four days. I got runners high from those short distances! Clearly my body loved running on ONE level, but not on the others. I kept at it two years, then gave it up for swimming, weights, aerobics, biking and yoga. some things just don't work with your natural build and body.
