I'm sure there's a difference but for myself, I could make love to a girl without it being sexual or even leading to sexual stuff cause I don't believe in sex until after marriage I'm old school I believe the guy should hold the door for the girl, the guy should once in while buy his girls roses or flowers to express his love to her?

@aimee_ That sounds good and I agree

To me, "sex" is the umbrella term covering all variations, such as "shagging", "boning", "making love", etc.
"Making love" on the other hand is a more "specialised" word which further describes something about the sex.
I like to use "make love" or "lovemaking", but to me, it is more about the mental and emotional connection rather than the actions performed. So I will use these terms for any kind of sex with feelings of love; even when having animalistic, rough sex.
Others will likely limit the terms to more vanilla, sensual practices.1 0 0 0
